Ethnobotanical Garden
Aloha Chair Kaneali'i, Vice Chair Kimball, and Members of the Finance Committee,
My name is Kimberly Lei Kaho'onei. I am a resident of Kealakehe, Kona and I have
the privilege of being the Friends of Amy B.H. Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden's
first ever employee and the newly appointed Director. I have considered the
Garden and the amazing people who have poured their aloha to keep this Garden
open a huge part of my 'ohana. I have been there firsthand during the struggles of
the unexpected closure. I have been there with our South Kona and Hawaii Island
Community working to keep this Garden a community space for our community,
and now 1 am fortunate to have a role in its revitalization to bring our community
back to the Garden and to steward this community garden in pono way.
Our vision is "Ka malama 'ana i ka mo'omeheu, i mea a ola ai mai keia mua aku."
which means "Preserving culture, so that there is life to come." I want to mahalo
all of you for pushing our resolutions through, which allows us to holomua and
really malama our mo'omeheu and kaiaulu(community).
With effort from all of our dedicated board members, we now have a solid
strategic plan of stewardship that allows us to continue to preserve our living

collection and see our native Hawaiian plants thrive, to allow the Garden to be a
safe space and resource for our cultural practitioners and community members,
allows us to move forward in renovating and completing our community meeting
i
space where we can share 'ike (knowledge) of things such as ethnobotany, share
i
'Olelo Hawaii and mo'olelo Hawaii, and overall, provide opportunities to support
our community and see them thrive back at the Garden.
