Aug 2 County Council meeting—email testimony
Ms Maile David and County Council,
Aloha, I'm Alan Rolph, President of the Friends of Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden in Captain
Cook. The Garden is a non-profit organization set up when the Friends purchased the Garden from
Bishop Museum in 2019 with significant Federal,State and County help, after it was closed in 2016 and
put up for sale. Our strategic plan for the Garden is to bring it forward to be a community hub, beyond
keeping it maintained as a beautiful culturally significant Garden. We plan to do this with regular native
Hawaiian plant sales from our nursery, and cultural and botanical educational activities for keiki, adults
and families. The Gardens plants are springing back under a great Garden manager and his staff,
however our buildings, especially our 2 older residences, have been neglected and are in significant
need of maintenance and repurposing to meet our strategic goals for the community. We thank you for
your current and continuing support through the County's public access maintenance fund.
