Subject: Testimony for Bill 120, regarding EV charging -- support for the bill
Aloha, Hawaii County Council members,
I urge you to pass legislation that will provide an adequate number of Electric Vehicle charging stations on the
island. As people are getting more Electric Vehicles, the need to be able to charge them will grow.
The only reason I've not purchased an Electric Vehicle up to this point is the concern that I may be traveling around
the island and have no place to quickly and efficiently charge my car. My guess is, I am not the only one. As
government is encouraging people to use less fossil fuel, and that includes buying EVs, it makes sense to encourage
that behavior by providing infrastructure to support the vehicles. So I support Bill 120.
Our county should be a leader in providing charging stations.
Although the legislation speaks specifically to Level 2, I think it makes way more sense to focus on putting in Level 3
chargers. Level 2 chargers can take up to 8 hours to charge an EV, whereas Level 3 chargers are far more efficient.
Yes, the initial cost for Level 3 chargers is higher—but who, realistically, can take the time to park their vehicle in a
public lot for many many hours? It feels like Level 2 chargers are a waste—please consider encouraging the use of
Level 3 chargers.
