Subject: Support for Bill 120 on EV charger requirements for public parking lots
Dear County Council:
We are writing to express Think B.I.G.'s (www.thinkbighawaii.org) support for Bill 120
that codifies new state requirements for installing EV chargers at new parking lots with
at least 50 parking stalls.
Think B.I.G. is a Big Island nonprofit focused on improving our island's resiliency,
equity and sustainability. One of our key initiatives is to electrify transportation of all
types, including passenger vehicles.
Bill 120 is a prudent and needed change to county requirements,which recognize and
support the strong increase in EV ownership that is occurring now. By installing public
EV chargers at new parking facilities with fifty stalls or more we will have sufficient
charging options on our island to provide "range confidence" to existing and new EV
owners.
Moreover,the bill provides a requirement that existing and new EV chargers be
maintained in good working order. While the current draft does not contain language
on penalties, Think BIG recommends that penalties be included in the final draft in
order to promote compliance with the law.
