HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 536 Draft 01 2020-2022A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO VIBRANT HAWAI‘I
TO ASSIST WITH EXPENSES FOR ITS MAKAHIKI EVENTS IN NORTH HILO AND KOHALA.
WHEREAS, Vibrant Hawai‘i is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that brings community-based organizations, government, foundations, and businesses together to build awareness and implement
strategies that are developed and resourced by the community; and
WHEREAS, Makahiki is marked by the rise of the constellation Makaliʻi (Pleiades) in early November in which land districts traditionally aspired to produce and share their harvest in
recognition of Hawai‘i’s abundance, deep connections to place, and investment in social cohesion; and
WHEREAS, Vibrant Hawai‘i aims to restore the ancestral practices of Makahiki, in today’s modern context, to include year-end reflection, celebration, resource inventory, data analysis,
forecasting, and strategic planning; and
WHEREAS, Vibrant Hawai‘i has over 35 Resilience Hubs around Hawai‘i Island that are powered by adaptive leaders in the communities with the knowledge and skill sets to plan and host
public Makahiki events in the districts of North Hilo and Kohala; and
WHEREAS, Vibrant Hawai‘i is requesting funds to assist with expenses for event supplies (signs/banners, office supplies, printing, etc.), safety and sanitation supplies and equipment,
youth training workshops, awards for youth showcases, emergency preparation kits, and special event insurance; and
WHEREAS, the Department of Parks and Recreation provides and facilitates a wide variety of services to meet the needs of the community while maintaining the cultural uniqueness of our
rich heritage, diversity, and the aloha spirit; and
WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawai‘i County Code, Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via resolution identifying
the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 1 will be appropriated to the Department of Parks and Recreation to provide
a grant to Vibrant Hawai‘i to plan and host Makahiki events in the districts of North Hilo and Kohala.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
