Dear Hawaii County Council Members,
I'm writing to indicate my support of Bill 120 on behalf of the Big Island EV Association and Hawaii EV
Association; grassroots non-profits focused on enabling sustainable transportation. This bill will allow the buildout of
reliable public charging stations across Hawaii Island and equitable adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).
Public charging stations will allow fair access to clean, efficient vehicles. They will enable Hawaii Island residents to
drive an EV regardless of their ability to have a home-based charge (many don't). They will also encourage visitors to
rent EVs.
The transition to clean transportation is inevitable. Manufacturers are responding to consumer demand and
government bans on gas cars with an ever-increasing array of EVs. At some point soon, it will be challenging to
purchase a new gas car.
Electric vehicles are more affordable to maintain and operate, clean our air, help reduce our dependence on oil
imports, and reduce our emissions. This is driving a significant increase in adoption(-30% increase year over year).
With Bill 120, we will help ensure the momentum is not hampered by inadequate public charging.
Lastly, charging station site owners can leverage generous rebates and incentives to offset the costs of installing
charging stations and benefit from brand enhancement, charging station revenue, and indirect revenue from customers
who linger while waiting for their vehicles to charge.
