County Council
Dear Chairman Arakaki,
We support the concept of self-help housing and its intent to provide affordable
housing in our community.
As a service business, we hire many people around the island to serve our
customers. The job skills required are varied and we provide employment
opportunities for young people starting out in life. Often we hire people that start
out at an entry level position and work their way upward within our company, or
move on to jobs with other firms.
This upward mobility is good for our employees, their families and the community
at large. We believe the advancement of our employees is enhanced by the
possibilities of homeownership in their community.
I understand five (5) KTA employees are now homeowners through the self-help
program. The affordable mortgage payments, lack of any required down
payment, and the self esteem created through building their own homes are all
positive aspects of this program. For these reasons, we support the self-help
housing projects of the Hawaii Island Community Development Corporation.
Thank you for this opportunity to comment.
Sincerely,
Barry K. Taniguchi
