Your Committee on Finance, to which was referred Resolution No. 594-22,reports as follows:
Resolution No. 594-22,transmitted byFinance Director Deanna S. Sako via Communication No.
1069
dated October 14, 2022, authorizes the Mayor to enter into an agreement with the Federal Emergency
Management Agency pursuant to Hawai`i Revised Statutes Section 46-7, for a grant to the Hawaii
County Fire Department.
This resolution allows for the receipt of$494,900, which would be used toward the department's
purchase and installation of washer/extractor/dryers for personal protective equipment and for grant
writer fees.
Committee Member Ashley L. Kierkiewicz asked for Fire Department Chief Ian Smith to provide a brief
explanation on this measure. Mr. Smith spoke to the specifics of what these washer/extractor/dryers will
do and how vital it is for the health and safety of our firefighters.
Pursuant to Hawai`i Revised Statutes Section 46-7, the Mayor is authorized to apply for, receive, and
expend the funds for contracts with private parties, other counties,the State, or the United States
government for functions or activities which the county is authorized to perform.
Your Committee on Finance is in accord with the purpose and intent of Resolution No. 594-22, and
recommends its adoption.
