The grant will be used to establish a community resilience hub in Pa`auilo to address the current and future needs for food systems, a sustainable economy and community care. Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Department of Research& Development to provide $100,000 to Hui Mdlama i ke Ala `Ulili,pursuant to Hawaii County Code (2016 Edition as amended) Chapter 2, Article 25, Section 2-139(a)(3)(A). This program will establish a community resilience hub in Pa'auilo to address the current and future needs for food systems, a sustainable economy and community care. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): The application, Kahi Hanai Kanaka o huiMAU: huiMAU Community Hub, was selected for funding as a result of the Request for Proposals (RFP) no. 2022-01. The Principal Investigator for this project is Hui Malama i ke Ala `Ulili (huiMAU). It will host 18 food distributions and each monthly event will serve an average of a thousand pounds of locally-sourced produce, proteins and value-added products. Approximately 245 individuals in the Hamakua area will receive the distributions. The award will allow huiMAU to extend food distribution hours, conduct educational workshops, events with local farmers and pilot sales o their products to support and maintain the food hub operations for the long term.
