Re: Provide Funds to La`i`6pua 2020
The Department of Research& Development wishes to provide $100,000 to La`i`opua
2020, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization. The grant will be used to teach food preservation
techniques, encourage the community to buy local produce, and support a food program
for qualified students in West Hawaii.
Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Department of Research& Development to
provide $100,000 to La`i`6pua 2020, pursuant to Hawaii County Code(2016 Edition as
amended) Chapter 2, Article 25, Section 2-139(a)(3)(A).

A REQUEST:
This is a request for a resolution to enter into a contract with La'i'6pua 2020, a non-profit
organization, for the purpose of supporting the Ho'okahua Food Preservation Project for
$100,000.00. This program will teach food preservation techniques, encourage the
community to buy local produce, and support a food program for qualified students in West
Hawaii.
B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED):
The application, Ho`okahua Food Preservation Project, was selected for funding as a result of
the Request for Proposals (RFP) no. 2022-01.
The non-profit, La`i`6pua 2020, is the Principal Investigator for this project. It operates a
certified child care facility in West Hawaii. For this project, 525 West Hawaii K-12 students
will be introduced to food preservation techniques for canoe plants through workshops, 125 K-
5 students through after school and summer enrichment programs and preserved foods will
be sent home with 125 students during long weekends.
