AN ORDINANCE AMENDING CHAPTER 15,ARTICLE 7, SECTION 15-62, OF THE HAWAII COUNTY CODE 1983 (2016 EDITION,AS AMENDED), RELATING TO THE MEMBERSHIP OF THE VETERANS ADVISORY COMMITTEE. BE IT ORDAINED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII: SECTION 1. Chapter 15, article 7, section 15-62, of the Ilawai`i County Code 1983 (2016 Edition, as amended), is amended to read as follows: "Section 15-62. Membership and tenure. (a) The members shall serve staggered terms of five years. (b) The membership of the committee shall include one representative each from the American Legion, Big Island National Guard Retirees Association, Big Island Retired Military Association, [Disabled ^r.,efiea Veterans,] and Veterans of Foreign Wars. The committee shall also include [seven] eight at-large members. Seven or more of the twelve members of the committee shall have served in the United States uniformed services, provided that the committee may still meet and conduct business if due to a vacancy or vacancies less than seven members have served in the United States uniformed services. (c) Initially, two members shall be appointed for a term of one year, two members shall be appointed for a term of two years, three members shall be appointed for a term of three years,three members shall be appointed for a term of four years, and three members shall be appointed for a term of five years. (d) Any vacancy on the committee shall be filled for the remainder of the unexpired term, but members whose terms have expired may continue to serve until their successors have been appointed and confirmed. (e) Members shall be eligible to succeed themselves for additional terms,provided that no member shall serve on the committee for more than three consecutive terms." SECTION 2. Material to be repealed is bracketed and stricken. New material is underscored. In printing this ordinance, the brackets, bracketed and stricken material, and underscoring need not be included. SECTION 3. Severability. If any provision of this ordinance, or the application thereof to any person or circumstance, is held invalid, the invalidity does not affect other provisions or applications of the ordinance that can be given effect without the invalid provision or application, and to this end the provisions of this ordinance are severable. SECTION 4. This ordinance shall take effect upon its approval.
