WHEREAS, the primary purpose of the sister city program is to foster friendship between municipalities; and. WHEREAS, such a sister city program would benefit the people of the affiliated cities through the exchange of cultural exhibits , educational programs and other matters of common interest ; and WHEREAS, the affiliation of the County of Hawaii with the city of Nago, Okinawa , Japan, as sister cities was recommended by the Nago City Council; and WHEREAS, the County of Hawaii would be pleased and honored to be affiliated with the city of Nago as a sister city . NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that a sister city program be established between the County of Hawaii and the city of Nago. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the city of Nago be and is hereby requested to take whatever action that may be necessary to effect this relationship. BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that certified copies of this resolution be transmitted to the Mayor of the city of Nago and the Hui Okinawa club. Dated at Hilo , Hawaii, this 9th day of April , 1986. We will send a copy of the sister city resolution with the tentative English translation. The action of Nago City Council is very encouraging for us and we are hoping that your County Council will pass a similar resolution soon. Mr. Yamashiro, we are planning to have a sister city ceremony and celebration party on May 15 and we very much appreciate if you and the other members of Hawaii County Council could visit us in Nago with Mayor Carpenter and the members of Hui Okinawa. We will have a ceremony and party at Nago Civic Center which opened last August and we are going to invite about 300 citizens from all walks of life. We wish many people of the Big Island will join the delegationheaded by Mayor Carpenter. Well Mr. Yamashiro, we are very much looking forward to hearing the good news and seeing you in May in Nago.
