The grant will be used to support the Pulama Kahalu'u: Supporting Ongoing Stewardship Program by providing an educational and stewardship program at Kahalu`u Bay. Enclosed is a resolution authorizing the Department of Research& Development to provide $87,047 to The Kohala Center, pursuant to Hawai`i County Code (2016 Edition as amended) Chapter 2, Article 25, Section 2-139(a)(3)(A). The purpose of this program is to provide an educational and stewardship program at Kahalu'u Bay. B. BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION (USE ADDITIONAL SHEETS AS NEEDED): Background: The Kohala Center has been conducting education and stewardship programs for over 15 years. It developed the Pulama Kahalu'u: Supporting Ongoing Stewardship program to provide a model for the protection and preservation of Hawaii's natural and cultural resources. Justification: The Pulama Kahalu'u: Supporting Ongoing Stewardship program achieves the department's Tourism Program goals of Responsible Tourism, Pono-Based Communication and Place- Based Education. The program will implement a communication, education and stewardship program for residents and visitors to Kahaluu Bay, in tandem with a pilot parking fee project that will support the program in the future.
