Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions, to which was referred Resolution No. 24-23,
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 24-23, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna S. Sako, via Communication No. 25 dated
December 2, 2022, authorizes the Department of Research and Development to award funds to The Food
Basket.
This resolution would provide grant funds in the amount of$91,500, to cultivate fresh produce, reduce
food waste, increase the volume of fruits and vegetables diverted to local food assistance programs,
expand the consumption of local agricultural products, deepen engagement with Hawaii Island's food
system, and heighten the program's sustainability.
Research and Development Deputy Director Robert Agres and Economic Development Specialist
Glenn Sako came forward to explain the purpose for this grant award.
Pursuant to section 2-139(a)(3)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, Hawaii County is authorized to grant
awards in excess of$25,000 to nonprofit organizations that specifically identify the organization receiving
the grant funds and the purpose for which the grant funds shall be used in an ordinance or resolution.
Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 24-23, and recommends its adoption.
