Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions, to which was referred Resolution No. 26-23,
reports as follows:
Resolution No. 26-23, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna S. Sako, via Communication No. 27
dated December 2, 2022, authorizes the Department of Research and Development to award funds to
La`i`Opua 2020.
This resolution would provide grant funds of$100,000, to support the Ho`okahua Food Preservation
Project that will teach food preservation techniques, encourage the community to buy local producs, and
support a food program for qualified students in West Hawaii.
Council Member Michelle Galimba assumed the chair from Chair Holeka Goro Inaba. Research and
Development Deputy Director Robert Agres came forward to explain the purpose of this grant award for
this project.
Pursuant to section 2-139(a)(3)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, Hawaii County is authorized to grant
awards in excess of$25,000 to nonprofit organizations that specifically identify the organization
receiving the grant funds and the purpose for which the grant funds shall be used in an ordinance or
resolution.
Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions is in accord with the purpose and intent of
Resolution No. 26-23, and recommends its adoption.
