This is an affirmation by the Kohala Animal Relocation and Education Service or
KARES of your proposal to allow "partial funding for Waiwai grants".
Grant funding from the County of Hawaii has been crucial for KARES to provide
our services to vulnerable family pets and their human companions. Our services
include accessible free veterinary care and spay and neuter surgeries to prevent
unwanted litters of pups and kittens. KARES is often the only reliable resource
available to assist low income island families.
While KARES and other nonprofits endeavor to submit a realistic request for
funding reflecting the need for the increased services to the island, it would be
tragic for all of us if only a YES/NO response of the Council for the grant would
result in an absolute rejection without the possibility of receiving even partial
funding to carry out our work. For KARES in particular, our 2023-2024 request is
for 24% of our totalprogram costs, up 7% from 2022-2023 for free animal care
services not available elsewhere in the County.
