Dear Chairman Arakaki and Council Members:
This letter is respectfully submitted regarding Communication No. 539/6111 No. 162, dated
October 26, 1999, relating to the intersection of Pualani and Wikolia Street in the Kalani Sunset
Subdivision.
Mr. Richard Nishimura of the Department of Public Works Traffic Division recently conducted a
site inspection and concurs with Officer Matt Slayden's report of the hazardous conditions when
motorists on Wikolia Street turn left onto Pualani Street.
At Nishimura's request, Officer Rollin Rabara polled ten of eleven residents (list is attached)
whose homes are within the immediate area of this intersection. All residents contacted are in
favor of a four-way stop at this intersection versus relocating the stop signs from Pualani Street
to Wikolia Street. These residents report that having afour-way stop would in fact slow traffic.
It is our understanding that Nishimura, having been apprised of the residents' input, will be
conducting a traffic study.
We are thus requesting that Bill No. 162 scheduled for the County Council hearing on
January 5, 2000, be deferred until the traffic study is completed.
