Subject: Bill 18
Aloha Councilmembers,
I strongly support Bill 18. 1 see it as crucial to reserve some units for county and state employees in order to have efficient
government resources available to residents.
It is also fair to allow residents, rather than non-residents,to obtain these units.
However, I would allow workers, rather than returning students,as third preference. While enrolled as a student, I myself
expected that in order to afford housing I would be living in seriously overcrowded and inexpensive apartments. However, I
also anticipated that once working full-time, my housing situation would be less crowded and I would be able to escape the
avocado or gold sculptured carpets. I'm happy to report I achieved this goal.
I very much appreciate that preference is also given in terms of length of residency in Hawai'i County in this bill. It makes no
sense to allow newcomers access to affordable housing prior to those who have lived here numerous years. The long-term
residents have been contributing to our workforce and community while making do with the lack of reasonably priced rental
units for many years. I wholly support the preference this bill would allow.
Thank you,
Jodi Mercier
