Aloha Hawaii County Council,
Strongly IN SUPPORT of HB955.
Our apprentices need to see how we are kind, compassionate and brave WITH women as we midwife them. One cannot
observe this from reading books nor learn how to apply midwifery in real life if they have never been shown how to
midwife. This bill will allow real life experience to be a learning path. There are also many book smart providers who
just went through standardized schooling but have poor bedside manners that cause birthing women/families trauma,
because they never learned how to be WITH women. Midwifery is an act and an art of being, it is not a title. The path to
being trained through apprenticeship is key in preserving the art of midwifery for generational knowledge and traditions
to continue to thrive. This is especially true in rural communities where access is already limited, physically, socially,
economically.
