I am a fourth generations Kama'aina from Holualoa Ahupua'a so this preservation project is part of my immigrant family
history and I find it valuable to share the stories in which we can reflect on our past in hopes that we teach our
community to make better decisions for our future generations with compassion and empathy.
My name is Maki Morinoue and I am the current Vice President of Pulama is Kona, a Heritage Preservation Council.
We are a 501 c 3 that has been in service to our Kona community for over 26 years and we look to grow and bring
forward our mission and vision in more impactful and meaningful ways.
I am testifying in support of receiving funding for our educational related costs for the monument.
One of our current preservation projects is restoring the 1925'88 Temples Pilgrimage Monument, built by members of
the Kona Koyasan Mission located just south of Holualoa Village on Mamalahoa Highway. The 12-foot tall marker is
made of concert, rock and metal with Japanese inscription. It was built by members of the Kona Koyasan Mission. It is
one of possibly two monuments remaining from over thirty large monuments built by the Japanese immigrants during a
twenty-year period from 1910-1930 along the Mamalahoa Highway.
Pulama requests$2000 to fund the educational portion of the project which includes its nomination to the Hawaii'
Register of Historic Places and interpretive signage at the monument. Historic Hawaii is very supportive of this project
and has awarded us a grant. Additional funds are needed. We appreciate your time, consideration and support of our
funding request.
