Re: Res. 51-23 Authorizes the Direction of Finance to Negotiate a Sixty-Five Year
Lease with the State of Hawaii for the Purpose of the Development and
Construction of a Public Library by the Hawaii State Public Library System,
situated at Waikoloa, District of South Kohala, County and State of Hawaii, and
Identified as Tax Map Key: 6-8-041-020 at a Set Lease Rental Amount of$0.00
Per Year
The Hawaii State Public Library System (HSPLS) strongly supports Res. 51-23 which
authorizes the execution of a 65-year lease between the County of Hawaii and the
HSPLS for the purpose of developing a new public library in Waikoloa, Hawaii.
For many years, the community of Waikoloa has actively campaigned for a public library
in their growing community. With the nearest public library more than 20 miles away,
the HSPLS has been diligently looking for the perfect site to serve the Waikoloa
community. The parcel identified as Tax Map Key: 6-8-041-020 by the County of Hawaii
is a great location for a public library within the residential community providing easy
accessibility for families.
We are particularly thankful for the efforts of Councilmember Cindy Evans,
Representative David Tarnas, the Department of Land and Natural Resources and
Hawaii County, particularly Harry Yada of the Office of Housing and Community
Development.

We look forward to working with the County of Hawaii to build a new public library for
the Waikoloa community.
