Dear Ms. Kiyosaki:
Subject: Disability Rights Hawaii letter of Februazy 3, 1997
Mr. Ron Amundson of Disability Rights Hawaii has asked the Council to look into whether the County
is complying with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) relating to the installation of curb cuts.
In particular, his letter of Februazy 3, 1997 alleges that the Depaztment of Public Works is not
complying with an ADA requirement that curb barriers adjacent to roadways being repaved must be
removed in conjunction with the repaving project. It is my understanding that Leslie Chow of the
Legislative Auditors Office has already discussed this matter with you and your staff.
I have attached a copy of his letter for your review. For the benefit of the members of the Council,
please provide us with the County's perspective on the concerns raised in this letter. I am particulazly
interested in leazning what measures are being taken to assure that the Department of Public Works is
working to comply with the ADA and would appreciate your advice as to whether you feel that County
law needs to be amended in order to facilitate this outcome.
The Public Works and Parks Committee will discuss Mr. Amundson's letter during its April 1, 1997
meeting. Your response by March 19, 1997 will enable us to include it on the agenda as well. Thank
you for your assistance in this matter.
