PC From: Rebecca Colvin Sent: Monday, March 06, 2023 8:33 AM To: Council Testimony Subject: • 3/8/2023 COUNTY COUNCIL MEETING; SUPPORT CRF RES 64-23: GRANTING $5000 TOWARDS THE EDUCATIONAL RELATED COSTS FOR THE 1925 MONUMENT PROJECT Good morning: I am a member of Pulama Ia Kona, a Heritage Preservation Council located in Holualoa. Pulama Ia Kona is a 501(c)(3) that has been in service to the community for over 25 years preserving and protecting the special qualities of historic Kona. I am testifying in support of RES 64-23--granting funding for educational related costs for the 1925 monument project. One of our current preservation projects is restoring the 1925 '88 Temples Pilgrimage Monument, built by members of the Kona Koyasan Mission located just south of Holualoa Village on Mamalahoa Highway. The • 12-foot tall marker is made of concert, rock and metal with Japanese inscriptions. It was built by members of the Kona Koyasan Mission. It is the only object remaining from one of many missions and objects built by the Japanese immigrants during a twenty-year period from 1910-1930 along the Mamalahoa Highway. Pulama requests $5000 to fund the educational portion of the project which includes its nomination to the Hawaii' Register of Historic Places and interpretive signage at the monument. Historic Hawaii is very supportive of this project and has awarded us a grant. Additional funds are needed. 47) I appreciate your time, consideration, and support of this funding request. Sincerely, Rebecca Colvin Comm. No. 11b.1 Ref. To: P(Uskilui1 1 Ref. Date MAR - 8 220
