RE: Testimony on behalf of Domestic Violence Hurts Animals and People (DVHAP)
To County Council Members,
My name is Keolalani Oka and I am a board member of the non-profit organization Domestic
Violence Hurts Animals and People (DVHAP). I have cultivated a relationship with the Building
and Construction Teacher at Kealakehe High School. He has generously offered to work with his
students on creating shelters for dogs out of donated pallets for DVHAP. Students of his class
will engage in a hands-on systematic approach to building shelters for dogs. Skills utilized in this
process include but are not limited to; planning, mathematics, critical thinking, problem solving,
communication skills and above all, a sense of ownership and accomplishment on the students
behalf. Therefore, the funding that may be appropriated to DVHAP will have a dual impact on
the community, students will have an opportunity to learn new vital skills needed in the future
and the recipient will be able to provide much needed shelter from the elements for his or her
four-legged friend.
