I am a U.S. Coast Guard documented captain and commercial fisherman hailing out of Hilo, Pohoiki, and Hawaii Island. My family has fished and made a living out of Pohoiki for multiple generations. This harbor is one of the most productive in the entire state and plays a key role in feeding and keeping our communities safe. Since the eruption and closure of the harbor, Fishermen have been struggling to keep our way of life alive. It is over 70 miles one way to reach our fishing grounds from Hilo. Add-on the soaring price of bait, ice,and fuel, and you have an insurmountable circumstance. Pohoiki is the only harbor for many miles and it is crucial for safe access to the East and South-East Waters of Hawaii Island. It is extremely important that we have access to our fishing grounds and are able to bring a sustainable source of food to our communities. With the bulk of food coming in to Hawaii being imported, we cannot afford to not have Pohoiki operational. As we have known for many years, our local resources are what will keep us alive when it counts. Please do what is necessary to move Reso. 91-23 forward and appropriate the funds needed to dredge and re-open Pohoiki Boat Ramp. Mahalo! Kaiana Trask s } 4=, . 4 s Comm. o, Ref. To: 1XI Ref. ate 5
