Narrative to support CRF rant application

St. Augustine's Episcopal Church was awarded a grant of$38,500 from the Full
Calabash Fund, a program established and administered by the Kohala Center to
mitigate the pandemic's impact on those most affected. The Final Report covers the
period 1 Jan 2021 through 1 May 2022. Curing this period, we served 11,624 meals as
drive through or delivery in North Kohala. We partnered with over 12 local organizations
that help us to prepare and distribute meals. Most meals were distributed in a drive
through format. Volunteers delivered meals to Senior Housing and to others that could
not drive through.
Successes resulting from this grant
e Many residents of North Kohala were provided quality meals on a regular basis.
We gave meals to anyone that wanted them. We reached a good cross section
of the population. We advertised on the local radio, bulletin boards, banners on
the highway, social media, and word of mouth. By providing 300-550 meals each
time, we provided meals to a high proportion of North Kohala's population of
about 5600. (About 2600 in 96719 and 3000 in 96755).
• Local farmers were paid for their produce and local restaurants were paid to
prepare and cook these meals. This put about $38,000+ into the economy of
Hawaii County. Almost all funds were funneled to local businesses. Many items
that St. Augustine's paid for were "other" costs such as containers, gloves,
insurance, posters, banners, and non-local food when necessary.
• St. Augustine's was able to forge new relationships with several Kohala
organizations that we asked to help us plate and distribute the meals. We do not
have enough members to accomplish this without their support. Many
organizations have asked to be invited back to help with the Community Meal,
and I think this is another measure of the success/value of the program in helping
families in the district.
• The grant helped us to grow our partnerships and relationships with
organizations and businesses in the North Kohala community. As mentioned
earlier, we have worked with 12 community partners just in preparing and
distributing meals. We have established business relationships with restaurants,
farmers, and producers across the island as well as in Kohala. This increases our
ability to conduct community meals and similar projects in the future. Members of
our organization have gotten experience in organizing projects and working with
diverse groups of people.
