Subject: Proposed Budget for 2023-2024 Request for Line Item Added
Aloha,
There are 69 cesspools and 14 septic tanks along Ali'i Drive and more mauka in the Kahalu'u area. There
are no sewer lines for 1 mile on Alii Drive from Kahalu'u Beach (at Makolea St.) to Queen Kalama. Sewage
pollutes the ocean when it seeps through the porous volcanic/sand at high tides. Septic tanks are not the
answer, the leach lines put urine and polluting household chemicals directly into the soil. Septic tanks can
fill up at king tides or tsunamis and overflow.
I am requesting to have a line item included for the 1 mile of sewer needed to protect Kahalu'u Bay in the
2023-2024 budget to allow for ample funding to pay for an Environmental Impact Statement or an
Environmental Assessment and engineering plans in order to project the cost to get the 1 mile of sewer
line "shovel-ready", to apply for federal and state funding. This must be done this year to get the project
"shovel ready".
We need to protect the health of the people and the ocean environment on our island by reel ng
cesspools and septics now!
Mahalo for your service and help,
CD
