Subject: Kahalu'u Bay
I understand there are many local citizens concerned about the lack of sewer lines on Alii Drive from Queen Kalama
Street to Kahalu'u Beach. The number of cesspools along this stretch of our shoreline road is an immediate health
concern. There are already too many daily users in the water at Kahalu'u Bay to keep the ecosystem in balance.This
situation is much exasperated by the shoreline cesspools draining directly into the ocean at this location. Please note
that septic tanks are not an answer as there there is almost no land for drainage fields.
I hope design and construction of new sewer lines for this stretch of Alii Drive are included in the upcoming budget. An
EIS is a waste of time. Common sense and any experienced wastewater engineer will tell you that this section of Alii
Drive needs sewer lines now.
Kahalu'u Bay is a treasure and a huge tourist attraction. I have seen the health of this bay decline over the past 32 years
and it saddens me greatly. We are in danger of permanently ruining this precious resource if something is not done.
