Dear County Council Members,
While I think there may be a place for hydrogen storage in the distant
future, when our entire economy is solar powered; in its current iteration it is
not sustainable or economically viable. All hydrogen today is derived from
methane as a feedstock. Since it takes a considerable amount of energy to
break the CH4 bond and compress it into a liquid, it would be more efficient
to just burn methane. That's why SpaceX uses methane instead of
hydrogen. Of course, burning methane is not acceptable. Methane is 80
times more efficient at trapping heat, we have to minimize its use as much as
possible. Like hydrogen, methane is difficult to contain. The amount of
methane that leaks into the atmosphere makes methane a worse greenhouse
gas than even coal.
If you purchase hydrogen, you'll be responsible for dumping billions of
cubic feet of methane into the atmosphere. Don't be fooled by
greenwashing from the "natural" gas industry. This resolution is nothing
more than a way to boost profits for the gas industry. Don't fall for it. Put
everything into solar and net metering. Once our entire grid is solar powered
and we are generating excess energy from the Sun, then you can turn Hawaii
into an exporter of energy and sell THEM hydrogen, real clean energy.
