Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions, to which was referred Resolution
No. 178-23, reports as follows:
Resolution No. 178-23, transmitted by Finance Director Deanna Sako, via Communication
No. 293 dated April 28, 2023, authorizes the Department of Parks and Recreation to award funds to
`Ghana O Kohanaiki Cultural Foundation.
This resolution would provide grant funds in the amount of$48,000 for roof repairs to the Native
Hawaiian Hale at Kohanaiki Beach Park.
Parks and Recreation Deputy Director Michelle Hiraishi stated that Kohanaiki is a fantastic beach
park with a very large traditional hale that has a deteriorated roof needing to be replaced.
Pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(3)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, grant awards in excess of$25,000
to nonprofit organizations shall specifically identify the organization receiving the grant funds and
the purpose for which the grant funds shall be used in an ordinance or resolution.
Your Committee on Legislative Approvals and Acquisitions is in accord with the purpose and intent
of Resolution No. 178-23, and recommends its adoption.
