HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0279.052 2022-2024 bill 48 COMM. 219 From: Brian Tucker Sent: Tuesday, May 09, 2023 9:46 AM To: Council Testimony Subject: Proposed Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity and Resilience (OSCER) Aloha County Clerk's office, My name is Brian Tucker. I am a Puna Resident and I work in forest conservation, restoration and related to climate change. I am aware that County Council Chair Heather Kimball is submitting a bill to create a county Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity and Resilience(OSCER). This is very necessary to carry out the goals that the Mayor's Office has set forth, and I hope that this bill will be supported. It is one thing to state goals and well intentions. To be successful, these must be well planned and put forth into actionable steps. As an expert GIS Specialist, I cannot not say enough about how important the role of mapping and global awareness is to achieve this, so I hope the office will have someone with a GIS background employed in a leadership position and/or have the county GIS department's necessary level of support and expertise on the subject. There are a lot of dollars and activities going into this field globally, and more important than just doing it is doing it well. Because this has not been done before, you need creative, forward thinking leaders. I think a lot of people might worry that this may simply end up being promotion potential for someone who's done something entirely different, but they are a good, well-intended person. Please don't do that once you approve of this new office. Mahalo, Brian Tucker c. Comm. Ng,'21q'✓i Ref. To: " (105A0 1 Ref. Date MAY 1 6 2023
