HomeMy WebLinkAboutCOM 0294.001 2022-2024 P/LAA, 1 -23 COMM. 2Qa HOUSING Housing Hawaii's Future HAWAI'I'S PO Box 3043 FUTURE Honolulu, HI 96802-3043 May 16, 2023 TO: Chair Kimball and members of the Hawaii County Council RE: Resolution 179-23: AUTHORIZING THE DIRECTOR OF FINANCE TO NEGOTIATE A SIXTY-FIVE YEAR LEASE WITH THE HOUSING AND LAND ENTERPRISE OF HAWAII COUNTY, DBA: HALE 0 HAWAII Housing Hawai`i's Future is a movement led by young locals who will create opportunities for Hawai`i's next generation by ending the workforce housing shortage. On behalf of Housing Hawai`i's Future, I write in support of Resolution 179-23. We support innovative models for addressing housing affordability. This includes community land trusts like HALE o Hawai'i County Community Land Trust. HALE o Hawaii is modeled on Na Hale o Maui, a successful community land trust. Long-term lease agreements with land trusts is one way to allow county land to be used for housing without the county needing to engage directly in development. This frees up county resources that can be used for other purposes. We hope this is the first of many lease agreements between the county and the land trust.
