Aloha Council members-
I am very much in favor of Resolution 164-23, that will create the Kohanaiki Homesteads Water
Improvement district to install a waterline to our homes just makai of the Mamalahoa Highway in
North Kona. Please vote YES!
I have lived in my home since early 2009, when I did extensive repairs to the property and installed a
1200-foot Driscoll waterline from the meters at the Mamalahoa Highway. All of our water lines lay on
the dry stack rock wall and extend down the Church of God Road and then turn south under the road
and lay on the wall on the back of the yards of each home. For my home, the original installation
was around $3,000 and I have put another $2,000 in other repairs over the years.
There are leaks in someone's lines several times per month. Our homeowners group sends an
email each time a leak is spotted. Then everyone runs up to check if their meter is spinning. This is
incredibly time consuming, expensive to fix and wasteful of our precious water. Water supply to
homes is something we tend to take for granted, until it is gone, and you are scrambling to find a
plumber.
A very big mahalo for your YES vote! AND a very big mahalo for all who brought this project
to this point!! This project has taken almost 7 years to get to this point and was originally initiated by
council member Karen Eoff and Wendy Baez in 2016. After Karen termed out of council office and
Holeka Inaba was elected, Wendy Baez (legislative assistant) kept this project moving forward
working with council member Inaba, Department of Water Supply Engineer Ryan Quitoriano and
County Finance Director Deanna Sako.
