My name is Pua Tokumoto, producer of the first Tahiti Fete of Hilo. The event
will be held at the Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium on February 18-20, 2000.
Many think of this event as the Merrie Monarch of Tahitian dance.
For the last 10 years, this event has been one of the most popular programs in the
Bay Area of San Jose and San Francisco. Last year I was happy to accept an award
from the San Jose Visitor's and Convention Bureau, for promoting tourism to San
Jose. The San Jose Fete alone was responsible for over 1500 room nights at the San
Jose DoubleTree Hotel and several hundred room nights each at the SJ Hyatt and
SJ Hilton Hotel. Needless to say, people there love the Fete! The mayor of San Jose
made me promise to continue this popular 4th of July weekend event.
Because my husband and I wanted to come home to Hawaii again, we decided to
start a new Fete in Hilo, our communir?! We expect that in time, this event will
generate new business for Hilo as well as a wonderful cultural experience for all.
1 hope you consider allowing me do a short presentation and orientation on this
event and show a short 5-minute video of the Tahiti Fete of San Jose. In this way
you can gain an appreciation of what I am proposing for Hilo. I will also be happy
to answer any questions regarding the program.

Legendary Tahiti, tropical isle of the South Seas. Land of spellbinding beauty
and enchantment, motherland of the Hawaiian people.
The new HEIUA- 2000 Tahiti Fete of Hilo, truly a unique showcase for
Tahitian dance and music. In preliterate Tahiti, dancing was used to pass
down history and stories to the tamari i or the younger generation. The group
dances - `Ote `a, the most spectacular of all Polynesian dances usually per-
formed in traditional grass" skirts and elaborate headpieces, and the Aparima
and the Ahuroa, known as the Tahitian "hula" will be performed by both
amateur and professional groups during this exciting weekend in Hilo. See the
spectacular large dance group, "Heikura Nui "from Papeete, Tahiti, in their
stunning award-winning exhibition. Groups from the mainland and from all
