Zelko-Schlueter and I am testifying on behalf of Hawaiian Electric in support of Bill 48. Hawaiian Electric supports the creation of the Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity, and Resilience to coordinate and manage policies and programs to address sustainability, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and adapt to the impacts of climate change and other natural and human-caused hazards. Hawaiian Electric is committed to reducing carbon emissions in 2030 by 70% below 2005 levels. By 2045, our carbon emissions will be net zero. Reducing carbon emissions by more than two-thirds over this decade will be a stretch. We know it is achievable and if everyone like the County of Hawaii pitches in, we will create a cost- effective, sustainable and resilient energy system for future generations. Date JUN - 7 2021 our children and grandchildren, our communities, our customers, and employees will thrive, together. The Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity, and Resilience will promote environmental justice and equity by ensuring that all programs conducted by the office will consider the impacts of such programs on lower- and middle-income individuals and historically marginalized groups, and to ensure that the benefits of such programs reach all residents of the county. Accordingly, Hawaiian Electric supports the creation of the Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity, and Resilience. - Thank you for the opportunity to testify.
