One of the words in the proposed County Bill 84 is"Equity."
"Equity" is a buzz word being used now in place of"Equality."
So what's the big difference?
Let's say family A has 3 children of different ages, personalities,and abilities. The loving parents want to practice"equality" an
d give each child $300.00 knowing that one child will spend it quickly
while another child will save all of it. Each child receives an equal amount.
Family B has 3 similar children of various ages, personalities, and abilities. The loving parents here want to practice"equity" w
anting each child to have$300.00. The first child has spent all his money and has none,so he receives$300.00. The second ch
ild has$200 saved up,so he receives$100.00 from his parents.The third child is akamai and has$290 saved
in his piggy bank,so he receives only$10.00 from mom and dad. Each child now has a total of$300.00.
That's the difference between"equity" and"equality." So how do these terms play out in the real world?
There was some talk of adjusting mortgage rates for future home buyers. Normally those with high credit scores would enjoy
more favorable mortgage rates in recognition of their hard work and financial responsibility. However,
under the new proposal,the borrower with a favorable credit score would be penalized
with a HIGHER mortgage rate to help pay for those with a low credit score. This is"equality" in action and penalizes the hard
workers in favor of those less responsible.
I would caution the County Council in their usage of the terms"Equity" and"Equality" as these words carry deep implications.
