Aloha Council Chair Kimball and Council Members
I write in strong support of Bill 48 - the creation of an Office of Sustainability,
Climate, Equity and Resilience - OSCER. Please forward the bill from your —
committee with a strong recommendation of approval.
Frankly, I am stunned that Hawaii County, of all places in the United States, does
not already have such an office. Of the 3,000+ counties in the nation., none has
more potential disasters than Hawai'i County. Resilience is in our nature, and
should be supported by an influential government office. Sustainability with an
eye on climate change tethered to environmental equity is a "no brainer." The
individual components of OSCER are synergistic and this new office should
serve the public very well.
I am very pleased to support such a new agency because of the need and
because I believe it will pay for itself many times over. I hope the office views
itself not as a cost center, but as a revenue source.
Aloha,
