Dear Chair Kimball, Vice Chair Inaba and members of the Hawai'i County Council,
With 460 members, the Kona-Kohala Chamber of Commerce brings the business
community together to address key issues in our community, on our island and in our
state. Established in 1968, we work to enhance the quality of life for our community
through a strong, sustainable economy on Hawaii Island.
We support Bill 48 that amends the Hawaii County Code to create a new chapter
relating to sustainability, climate, equity and resilience. This bill is the legislative
framework to stand up the Office of Sustainability, Climate, Equity and Resilience
(OSCER).
The Kona-Kohala Chamber is a strong advocate of sustainability initiatives with a
dedicated Sustainability Committee that's been in existence for almost 20 years. The
goal of this committee is to promote sustainable and environmentally responsible
business practices and environmental stewardship.
The Kona-Kohala Chamber recognizes climate change impacts and supports measures
addressing this issue. We believe establishing this office is a sensible step in elevating
the County's efforts with this issue along with their other long-term sustainability goals.
We agree that now is the time to create this office because of the funding opportunities
that are available.
Please vote in favor of Bill 48.
