Subject: Strong Support for Bill 48
-y y.
Honorable Members of the Hawaii County Council, :9 t ;
I am writing to express my strong support for Bill 48,which proposes the creation of the Office of Sustainability, &mate,JY
Equity, and Resilience (OSCER)in Hawai'i County. I believe that this bill is a critical step towards addressing the challenges
posed by climate change, promoting sustainability, and building resilience in our community.
This office will provide our County with the following benefits:
Enables an action-oriented focus on the County's long-term sustainability, climate, equity, and resilience goals and the
development of policies required for those actions to be sustained.
Ensures adaptation and resilience efforts benefit all households, particularly focusing on our LMI and ALICE households, and
traditionally marginalized communities.
Enables the coordination of relevant actions and policies across County departments and with community stakeholders to
maximize the impact of sustainability, mitigation and adaptation, and resilience measures and reduce overall costs.
Enables a single office for technical support and funding resources to assist in adaptation and resilience efforts across
County departments.
I firmly believe that the passage of Bill 48 and the establishment of OSCER will position Hawaii County as a leader in
sustainability, climate change adaptation, and community resilience. By taking proactive measures to protect our environment
and promote equity,we can inspire other jurisdictions and set an example for responsible and forward-thinking governance.
Thank you for your support of Bill 48.This is our decade for long overdue and critical climate mitigation.
Sincerely,
Ron Reilly
