SUBJECT: Presentation by Greg Asner, PhD relating to study entitled"Coral Reefs
Benefit from Reduced Land-Sea Impacts Under Ocean Warming".
I respectfully request at least 45-minutes of time on August 1, 2023, during the appropriate
committee agenda, for a presentation by Greg Asner, PhD of Hawai`i Marine Education and
Research Center, relating to a study entitled"Coral Reefs Benefit from Reduced Land Sea
Impacts Under Ocean Warming".
An inter-agency team has just published a landmark 20-year study on the causes of coral reef
decline for all of West Hawaii Island. This briefing will summarize the findings, which reveal
links between land-based wastewater and sedimentation and the widespread decline in coral
health and fish habitat. The briefing will also reveal how the now compounding factors of land
management and climate change must be aggressively addressed in tandem if coral reefs are to
persist off Hawai`i Island in the years ahead.
Please refer this matter to the appropriate committee. Should you have any questions regarding
this request, please do not hesitate to contact me. Thank you.
