Aloha council members,
As is the case whenever I speak against the appointment of the nomination of a person willing to volunteer to take part
in government, this is not meant to be a personal affront. However, that doesn't mean that every person who throws
their hat into the ring should be approved as a voice of the community on boards and commissions — especially one
with the immense decision-making power of a Leeward Planning Commissioner.
I've read the bios of current planning commissioners. From that reading, it's hard to guess that the thought process on
the commission, including its voting record, is and has been as homogeneous as it is. Small business owners, etc. This
commission has been in virtual lockstep for almost 2 decades while being out of step with residents'goals of having
saner, better planned, more judicious land use and development than what our current administration has promoted.
There is a tremendous need for perspectives not so on board with nearly every development proposal handed down to
them by the planning department, possibly with the occasional exception of a Ione voice lost in the development din.
What this commission does not currently need to better balance its voice and broaden its perspective is a representative
of the real estate community. As with the CDP Action committees, diversity of views — not just professions — is critical
to this body being more than a rubber stamp for developers, Chamber of Commerce, tourism and other corporate-
friendly growth advocates.
While I mahalo Mr Livingston, I also ask that this body vote against his appointment while asking the mayor to come
back to you with a fresh voice — one that will bring a more community-centric perspective to the commission.
Mahalo and sincerely,
Janice.Palma-C-ilennie,
