My husband is native Hawaiian and has moved home to enjoy his retirement on his kulaiwi. We
selected a wonderful community in Pahoa with an easy lifestyle that is within our budget so we can
enjoy ka nani o keia mokupuni. But with this new change looming over our community, it may no
longer be feasible for us to remain.
There has to be choices available for the residents and there should be a cap on increases. Allow us
some time, if we have to, come up with means to afford insurance rather than assuming we have
unlimited funds to come up with an extra $300, $500 $700 extra a month. Many of my neighbors
are on limited income, relying solely on Social Security. So are you expecting the kupuna to find
part time jobs just so they can afford to stay in their homes?
If viable options are not found, there will be a max exodus of folks, many of the new residents
having to return to the continent with dreams of living here lost, and some native folks (like my
husband) who actually moved from O`ahu to escape the exorbitant prices there thinking they have
finally found a parcel of land they can afford. This would be another stab in the na'au of the native
peoples of whom this `aina inherently belongs to.
Do what is pono and support Bill 56, ke `olu`olu!
