Living on a complete fixed income of SSDI and SSI. It is currently an issue whether to buy food, put gas in our car or pay utilities OR pay our HPIA Homeowners Insurance Policy and our separate Hurricane policy through Palomar. Our combined monthly FIXED income is $2745 and our combined HPIA & Palomar poilicies are approximately $5248 PER YEAR in addition to land taxes, vehicle insurance, tags and licensing etc. to remain legal. So 2 months of our income is going straight to just our homeowners and hurricane policies, leaving us to decide whether to let our insurance policies lapse. We gave up our in home childcare because we can't run a business out of our home with HPIA. We cared for keiki below what most daycares charged, so their parents could make a decision to work vs. not being able to afford childcare. WE ARE BEING TAXED`AND INSURED into oblivion. We are being asked to make a choice between our safety, sanity and peace of mind. We are having to make decisions similar to the businesses that have had to close their doors due to the fact they couldn't afford the necessary insurance. We don't understand why HPIA is so high as in comparison to our hurricane policy JUST BECAUSE WE LIVE IN LAVA ZONE1 or ZONE2. Are we being priced out of the only home we've known? This has also caused many to say we can afford a mortgage but can't secure it because of insurance. So again we tell our children, work hard so you can acquire a home ONLY to say, we can't afford the insurance and surely don't want to end up like you struggling during disability and retirement. Please take this matter seriously as it has become a crime in our personal opinion to be charged WAY beyond most family means to protect what we worked most of our lives for. Also since HPIA is a Hawaii Property Insurance "ASSOCIATION" why are we not receiving reports on financial input and expenditures? Mahalo, y Kenneth and Donna Walker Comm.
