SUBJECT: Presentation by USDA Forest Service: Discussion Support to Improve
Ridge -to -Reef Stewardship in an Era of Rapid Global Change
I respectfully request at least 60 -minutes of time on September 19, 2023, during the appropriate
committee agenda, for a presentation by Christian P. Giardina, Research Ecologist of the United
States Department of Agriculture Forest Service (Pacific Southwest Research Station/Institute of
Pacific Islands Forestry), to discuss their operational scale planning for Ridge -to -Reef
stewardship.
Hawaii is being confronted by major threats to human health and safety and to ecosystems and
the services they provide. The USDA Forest Service and Arizona State University, in partnership
with state and university partners, are engaging these threats and the biocultural complexity,
multiple knowledge systems, and community-based strategies needed to facilitate operational
scale planning for ridge -to -reef stewardship. Currently, they are building a series of three
decision support tools to support manager efforts to anticipate and prepare for biophysical,
social, and economic constraints on stewardship while optimizing the allocation limited
resources in order to maximize ridge -to -reef benefits of stewardship.
