Aloha
I am a teacher for the state of Hawai'i and have lived on Hawaii island most of my life. I have taught school for
24 years. After years of saving I left Kauai to move back home to Hawaii island. I managed to buy an
affordable piece of property in Miloli'i and pay cash. The plan has always been to become sustainable on a
piece of agriculture zoned land. I put my remaining savings towards a house package from Honsador, a small
down payment, and paid all the designer, engineer and permit fees. After a year and 3 months they were finally
approved by the county. I fenced the property to keep out wild pigs and started planting food and native plants.
I hired a contractor to quote the home building. I have excellent credit. Everything was ready to go to finally
build a home for myself and my aging 87 year old mother who recently recovered from cancer. Then the bad
news...the insurance company that was supposed to cover me pulled out. Now I can't get the home loan. The
only insurance that I could find was a state insurance program that would cost me $600 a month on top of the
mortgage I would need to have to finance my house. That insurance is what made it unaffordable. This all
happened after Mauna Loa erupted on the other side of the island. I have now invested hundreds of thousands
of dollars. I'm 67 years old and time is running out. We need a safe home! Right now my mother and I are
living in a temporary 12 x 24 structure. I have done my part to secure what is needed for a legal and safe
home. Now it's up to the government who holds our future in their hands.
