SUBJECT: Presentation by Mike Ewall, National Expert on Energy and Waste Issues
We respectfully request approximately 45 minutes for a presentation by Mike Ewall who is a
national expert on energy and waste issues, as well as waste incineration and its hazards and
alternatives.
Since the early 1990s, Mike Ewall's work has directly led to the defeat of dozens of proposed
waste incinerators and other noxious and unnecessary industrial facilities. His research has
documented that waste incineration is the most expensive and polluting way to manage waste or
to make energy -- dirtier than burning coal and worse than using landfills without burning first. -
In 2003, he developed the Zero Waste Hierarchy that was the basis for the Zero Waste
International Alliance standard. He is a founding member of the Hawai'i Clean Power Task
Force, and an advisor to Kokua Na Aina, the group sponsoring his speaking tour.
We request that this presentation take place on committees scheduled for October 17, 2023.
