A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO ASSIST THE POLICE DEPARTMENT WITH PURCHASING
CERTIFIED AGRICULTURAL SCALES.
WHEREAS, agricultural theft is a persistent concern for Hawai‘i Island, and according to the United States Department of Agriculture, losses from agricultural theft and vandalism, as
well as security expenses, cost farmers on Hawai‘i Island $9.6 million in 2019; and
WHEREAS, Hawai‘i Island has many rural farming areas, and agricultural theft in these areas not only burdens farmers financially, but may also incentivize further thefts; and
WHEREAS, the Police Department’s efforts to address agricultural theft would be complemented by the acquisition of essential equipment, such as certified agricultural scales; and
WHEREAS, the Police Department is requesting funds to purchase certified agricultural scales to aid in the prosecution of agricultural theft; now, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAI‘I that Contingency Relief funds from Council District 6 will be appropriated to the Police Department to purchase certified agricultural
scales.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Council of the County of Hawai‘i hereby transfers/appropriates the following amount as set forth below:
