Re: Bill No. 198--Wai'aha Bay funding
Aloha Council Members:
Today I ask you to support funding for the acquisition of Wai'aha Bay
("Hoot's). This oceanfront property is the only remaining, white-sand pocket
beach near Kailua-Kona. li is a recreational resource for everyone near town Io
swim, surf, fish and enjoy the beauty of this sandy beach. Il is a natural
sanchiary amongst the increasing development in this coastal region.
I am co-counsel in two, pending lawsuits involving the issue of shoreline
location at Wai'aha Bay. We hope this litigation will provide the impetus for the
Stale, County and private citizens to forge a partnership fi>r the acquisition and
management of Wai'aha Bay as a beach park. Toward that end the owner must
he adequately compensated for the acquisition of private property. You now
have il~e opportunity to get the bat] rolling. We must start some~~-here, and the
time is now to invest in our most valuable asset--our shoreline resources.
Your constituents, indeed people around the State, are grateful for your
positive consideration of this matter. I look forward to wurking with you to
make the dream of Wai'aha Bay Beach Park a reality.
