Of <br />COUNTY OF HAWAII STATE OF HAWAII <br />RESOLUTION NO. 31G 23 <br />A RESOLUTION TRANSFERRING/APPROPRIATING AN APPROPRIATION OUT <br />AND FROM A DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT AND CREDITING SAME TO A <br />DESIGNATED FUND ACCOUNT TO PROVIDE A GRANT TO MALAMA 0 PUNA TO <br />SUPPORT FOOD SUSTAINABILITY INITIATIVES IN THE BLACK SANDS BEACH <br />COMMUNITY GARDEN. <br />WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, volunteer service organization <br />whose mission is to provide community resources to maintain a safe and healthy community <br />through environmental education, hands-on projects, advocacy, watchdogging, and land trusting; <br />and <br />WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna continues to serve as fiscal sponsor for the Keiki Garden <br />Project by the Black Sands Beach Community Garden, an exclusively community -driven and <br />maintained gardening initiative designed to increase awareness and agency around food security <br />and sustainability in Puna; and <br />WHEREAS, the garden project provides food insecure residents with fresh, nutritious <br />foods at low or no cost and cultivates gardening skills in Puna keiki, serving as a living, edible <br />laboratory that fosters healthy eating habits and environmental stewardship; and <br />WHEREAS, the Keiki Garden Project is geared towards providing youth with education <br />and hands-on experience related to gardening techniques and ongoing maintenance, thus <br />imparting values of patience, discipline, hard work, and sharing as well as caring for 'ohana and <br />community; and <br />WHEREAS, Malama 0 Puna is requesting funds to cover expenses relating to garden <br />expansion efforts including the procurement of catchment tanks, cinder, fruit trees, mulch, <br />pesticides, transportation costs for garden participants, and materials and supplies for the Keiki <br />Garden Project; and <br />WHEREAS, one of the goals of the Department of Research and Development is to <br />support sustainable agricultural practices by promoting educational opportunities designed to <br />build skills and capacity in the farm community; and <br />WHEREAS, pursuant to Section 2-139(a)(2)(A) of the Hawaii County Code, <br />Contingency Relief funds shall be transferred to an accepting County department/agency via <br />resolution identifying the nonprofit organization and the specific program, project, event, <br />activity, service, equipment, materials, or supplies for which the grant shall be used; now, <br />therefore, <br />BE IT RESOLVED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE COUNTY OF HAWAII that <br />Contingency Relief funds from Council District 4 will be appropriated to the Department of <br />Research and Development to provide a grant to Malama 0 Puna to support food sustainability <br />initiatives in the Black Sands Beach Community Garden. <br />
