Dear Chair Arakaki and Members of the County Council:
I am in support of Bill 198 to amend the Capital Budget to include appropriation of one
million dollars to acquire the shoreline property at Wai'aha Bay, Kailua Kona.
I would like to thank Councilman 1"yler for his efforts in bringing this bill before the
Council.
Aver the last few years Kona has seen a dramatic increase in new development proposals
for residential housing and condominiums. The number of residents and visitors is
inert=acing at a tremendous rate. The need for preserving open space and recreational
azeas is critical.
The four mile stretch of Ali'i Drive irnn,ediately south of Kailua is slated for heavy
residential development, and yet there is not a single park or public recreational area
established or planned.
The Wai'aha Beach Parcel acquisition would be a big step towards establishing a much
needed Beach Park and increasing open shoreline recreational space in the Kailua-Kona
area. This acquisition is an investment in our future and will make Kona a better place
for all residents and visitors alike.
I respectfully ask the Counci] to support this bill.
